For over a decade, Atlanta residents have been proud of the Georgia Aquarium, the second largest aquarium in the world.
Can you blame them? With more than 100,000 animals and 500 species (think: whale sharks, penguins, dolphins and sea otters) living in 10 million gallons of freshwater and seawater, the Georgia Aquarium is more than just a fun excursion for locals.
Not to mention weddings, summer camps and other special events (from scuba diving to sleepovers, guided tours and wine festivals) also unite visitors through a passion for animals and an appreciation of the beauty of the world’s seabed.
Of course, all that excitement comes at a price, and it’s not cheap. A family of four can expect to spend nearly $150 on tickets alone, and that’s before taxes, parking and food. (Note: adult tickets cost $39.95 if door-to-door purchases and children ages 3 to 12 pay $33.95.)
Don’t let these prices stop you from visiting this classic Atlanta attraction. The following are top excellent money-saving tactics to help you save as much as possible when you enjoy a day at the spectacular Georgia Aquarium.
Buy online, in advance
If you purchase your tickets online before your visit, you can save a couple of dollars on each ticket. If you want to start your day early, buy an “early bird” pass online and arrive within the first hour of the day to save even more on each ticket.
Keep your eyes wide open for early bird online visitors, with no time restrictions.
Take advantage of seasonal promotions
The aquarium often offers promotions, such as Imagination Nights, that allow visitors to experience everything the aquarium has to offer, but with fewer crowds and fewer dollars. The Imagination Nights promotion typically takes place during the summer evening (5-8 p. M.).
You get the tickets for only $26.95 plus tax, which must be purchased online. Ticket holders also have the opportunity to see a special presentation of the AT&T Dolphin show.
Purchase a CityPASS
If you know you would like to visit other Atlanta attractions, buying a CityPASS will help you save big. In addition to the Georgia Aquarium, the pass provides access to the World of Coca-Cola, Inside CNN Studio Tour, College Football Hall of Fame and more. The cost is $75 for adults and $59 for children ages 3-12.
Buy a combined ticket
If you don’t need access to all of Atlanta’s attractions, opt for the special combined pandas and penguins ticket, which provides access to the Georgia Aquarium and Atlanta Zoo for a fraction of the cost. Adults cost $54 and children ages 3-12 cost $44. 50 plus tax Bonus: $1 of every ticket sold goes to research and conservation. There is also the Mountains to Sea Combination Ticket, which grants access to the aquarium and Stone Mountain Park for $57.95 for adults and $52.95 for children.
Become an annual member
If you know you will visit the Georgia Aquarium often, become a member. After two visits, adult membership pays for itself and children save $7. All subsequent visits are free.
The more you visit, the more you save. A family of four can become a member for $279. You can also buy 95 ($3 savings) and individual passes for adults, children and seniors. Membership also comes with additional benefits, such as discounted tickets for special attractions.
If you can gather a group of friends and family to join the aquarium, you can make a special group reservation and receive discounted tickets. A group means 10 or more children to sleep away from home (such as school groups and clubs) or 15 or more students or adults. Prices vary depending on the type of ticket purchased, but you can count on good savings. Tip: Get one free adult ticket for every 25 tickets purchased.
Bring your military ID
Service members receive a 10 percent discount on tickets, so be sure to bring your military ID if you have one. Save even more by purchasing your tickets in advance at a participating military base box office: you can receive up to a 25 percent discount.
Eat before you go
Food and drink cannot be taken to the aquarium, so consider eating at home before you go and skip expensive snacks. There are also many inexpensive restaurants near the aquarium, namely fast-paced informal venues and popular chains.
Stay informed
Sign up for the Georgia Aquarium newsletter and follow their Facebook and Twitter pages to stay up to date with the latest discounts and special offers.
Visit the aquarium website regularly to see the different events that are happening. Although not all are discounted, they are excellent options for those who plan to get out and have a good time.
